The Hagfish has the reputation of being one of the slimiest, most horrible looking creatures on the planet.
Hagfish belong to the family myxinidae, are jawless and also claim the dubious honor of being the only living creatures on the planet earth with a skull but no vertebral column.
Hagfish have shown to significant difference in their shape or function for more than 300 million years, apparently of the opinion that evolution applied to everyone but themselves, and as a result, a Hagfish living today looks exactly the same as its ancestors did in the prehistoric ages.
Hagfish are shaped like eels, but unlike eels have avoided being eaten on the basis of their sliminess and unattractiveness.
Their skin is, however, sometimes used in the reaction of leather for belts and shoes.
Hagfish possess the distinctive trait of devouring their prey from inside their body, and have been known to feed on dead and decaying prey that are much larger than themselves.
The Star Nosed Mole
The Star Nosed Mole is one of the strangest looking animals on earth. Also known by its scientific name, Condylura cristata, it has a particularly distinctive appearance due to fleshy appendages almost resembling tentacles surrounding its snout.
These appendages are about twenty two in number and have been theorized to serve as both sensory organs and possible possessing the ability to detect seismic waves.
The other parts of the Star Nosed Mole are of ordinary appearance, with thick waterproof for and a long thick tail. The average sized mole weighs about 60 grams and has an average length of 18 cm.
The Star Nosed Mole prefers wet lowland areas which provide an ample supply of its regular diet of small animals and insects. The Mole hunts both during the night and in daytime and has been seen to be foraging for food even in winter.
