Diamonds have always been talk-of-the-town, a gem that hasn’t lost its charm and is still valued as one of the most beautiful, expensive and charismatic gems in the world. But everything given a slight twist becomes even more fascinating, and to carry forward this fact, colored diamonds were discovered and their concept introduced ever since.
Colored diamonds are simply that are in some color, blue, pink, red green- and it comes with no surprise that people are going absolutely nuts over the beauty of such colors, so much so people are actually preferring these over the traditional white and transparent diamonds. Some colored diamonds are naturally mined, which are of course very expensive because originality speaks it all, but to make it affordable for the general masses, gemologists and jewelers have started to color them by either a proper treatment process or by simply coloring them.
Grading process:
The grading process of a colored diamond is a bit distinctive than a transparent one, usually the process consists of evaluating on the basis of D to Z chart. Natural color-less diamonds are graded according to the 4Cs.
- D – F: This stage is where a diamond is absolutely colorless and transparent. This probably the most expensive kind.
- G – J: This category is the near colorless, these are the ones which have very minimum color, often looks colorless to the normal eye.
- K – M: This stage is the faint one where you can easily see a visible hint of yellow color on the diamond.
- N – R: This categorizes the very light colors, with a notable yellow or a light brown color reflecting from the piece.
- S – Z: This stage is the light one, these are properly colored diamonds and are in more demand than the very light colored diamonds mentioned above.
Other grading processes include first noting whether the diamond is of primary colors like blue, red, yellow and pink which are the basics for producing most diamond colors, then deciding upon how intense the color is. So in short, an original diamond is much more expensive than the ones that have been recently treated.
Synthetic diamonds:
In simple words, a synthetic diamond is a man made one which has been cultivated, shaped or colored in a way done by a human or machine. Even though most diamonds are naturally found and mined, many scientists have found a way to manually create a diamond, but these synthetic diamonds look as original as the former.
Determining diamond colors:
Color shades can be often confusing, and especially when they’re on diamonds. Usually each diamond consists of two color shades, one primary and one secondary. The color with the ‘ish’ on its end is the secondary one making the other a primary one. For instance, greenish blue; here green is the secondary one meaning the diamond is mainly blue with minor strokes of green. And if the diamond is named as brown red, then that means the piece is equally shaded of each color.
