  1. Sugar is the main reason for tooth decay.

Growing up we have been taught that sugar is the main cause of the decay of your teeth. Of course it can lead to cavity formation and other illnesses. However, sugar is not the main cause for the decay of your teeth.

 

Sugar is one of the main sources of energy for the human body. So this statement can be thought of as a myth since sugar is not the main cause of tooth decay. The main reason for tooth decay are the acids which are made from bacteria commonly known as bad bugs. These are formed when you digest carbohydrates to refined forms such as sugar. Then these formed bacteria interact with saliva to make the acid which will be used to form cavities in your teeth.

 

  1. Teeth whitening will damage the enamel.

Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are the key ingredients in many teeth whitening products. These are used as oxidant agents to remove stains form the enamel surface. This technique is done by many people at home but however teeth whitening should be done under the supervision of the dentist since many of the products which are available in the market can damage the enamel and dentists know how to use these products in a proper way so that the acids used will not be too strong so that it will damage the enamel.

 

The most common side effect of using teeth whitening id the teeth being over-sensitive. However, this is common even if it done alone or by a dentist and research has shown that there will always be an enamel loss in use of bleaching agents but the enamel will rematerialize with time.

 

  1. Mouthwash with alcohol is good to use.

The use of mouthwash with alcohol has been linked with oral cancer since 1970s. Research has feature proven that usage of alcoholic mouthwash will surely cause dental problems since it will dehydrate the mouth.
